From Engineering to the Board: Why Technical Leaders Must Master Innovation Governance

Many of the most brilliant minds in the corporate world come from technical backgrounds engineering, IT, and specialized operations. These are leaders who understand how things work. However, as they ascend toward the Boardroom, they often encounter a glass ceiling. They have the best innovation projects, but they struggle to get the green light from the Board.

The reason is rarely the quality of the technology. It is a language barrier. Boards don’t buy “features” or “innovative tech.” Boards buy Risk Mitigation, Strategic Alignment, and Governance. To break that ceiling, technical leaders must evolve from being managers of ideas to becoming Estrategistas de Governação.

The “Expert” Trap

As a technical expert, your instinct is to prove that your innovation works. But at the Board level, the technical feasibility is assumed. What the Directors are questioning is: “How does this fit into our strategic mandate? What is the governance structure to ensure this doesn’t become a liability?”

If you cannot answer these questions through the lens of ISO 56001 or a structured framework like Innovation360, your project will remain a “pilot” that never scales.

Commanding the Transition

To lead at the highest level, you must master three pillars of Strategic Innovation:

  1. Financial Translation: Turning technical milestones into economic value and market power.
  2. Systemic Governance: Moving from managing a team to managing a standardized Innovation Management System.
  3. Strategic Command: Developing the authority to advise the Board on where the industry is moving, not just where the product is going.
