Diplomacy and Innovation: Lessons from the Itamaraty Palace on Global Business Success

This week, I had the honor of accompanying a South African business delegation at the Itamaraty Palace in Brasília during the official visit of the South African President to meet with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Watching the gears of international diplomacy turn is a powerful reminder for any business leader: Diplomacy opens doors, but Innovation Management sustains the growth.

When companies cross borders whether from Africa to Brazil or vice versa the “Opportunity Space” is massive, but so is the risk of failure due to lack of structure.

The Strategic Bridge: Beyond Networking

Many believe that success in a new market depends solely on “who you know” (Networking). However, my experience as a Strategic Advisor shows that high-level connections only yield results if backed by Strategic Governance.

Here are three reflections on innovation I gathered from this diplomatic encounter:

1. Innovation as a Mandate, Not a Luxury

In the halls of Itamaraty, it’s clear that nations don’t just trade products; they trade trust and technological edge. For a company to succeed globally today, innovation cannot be a “creative spark”—it must be a managed discipline (ISO 56001) that ensures long-term competitive advantage.

2. Breaking the “Archaic Furniture” of Management

To enter a market as complex as Brazil, international companies must clear out old ideas of how business “used to work.” You cannot find new destinations using old roads. Success requires a methodology that tests current best practices against the “next practices” required for a new territory.

3. The Role of Leadership in Scale

The presence of presidents and CEOs at the table proves that innovation and strategic expansion are responsibilities of the top leadership. A leader’s job is to create the environment—the “Opportunity Space”—where teams can navigate customer frictions and technological trends with confidence.

Final Thought

Whether you are leading a South African conglomerate or a Brazilian startup, the challenge is the same: Operational Excellence gets you your profits today, but Innovation Excellence secures your profits tomorrow.

It’s time to take the helm and turn diplomatic opportunities into market power through disciplined innovation.
